Translation
In Weiqithere are gains that become losses, and losses that become gains. There are invasions that profit, and invasions that wound. There are times to play left, and times to play right. There are moves that must come first, and moves whose strength lies in coming later. There are moments for urgent pressure, and moments for patient movement. When connecting stones, do not think only of the immediate point; when sacrificing stones, think of what follows after. Some positions begin near and end far; some begin small and end abundant. If you would strengthen the outside, first strike within. If you would make the east substantial, first strike the west. Where routes are hollow and eyeless, first probe and observe. If no other group is harmed, then make ko. When granting passage, remain loose; when receiving passage, do not force battle. Choose the proper ground for invasion; if unobstructed, continue forward. These are the subtle depths of the game and cannot be left unknown. The Changes say: “If not one of the most refined under Heaven, who could partake in this?”
